Business, Culture & Leisure — Your complete guide to exploring Shenzhen with confidence.
Whether you're visiting Shenzhen for business, medical treatment, or leisure, this guide will help you navigate the city like a local. From world-class attractions and authentic Cantonese cuisine to efficient transport and shopping — discover the best of Shenzhen.
Fast, safe, and affordable — Shenzhen's transport system is world-class
The easiest way to get around. 16+ lines covering the entire city. Buy a Shenzhen Tong card at any station, or simply scan the QR code with Alipay or WeChat Pay. Trains run from 6:30 AM to 11:00 PM.
Taxis are metered and affordable (flag drop ~¥10). For ride-hailing, use DiDi (China's Uber) — the app has an English interface. Cash is rarely used; pay via app. Tip: screenshot your destination in Chinese to show the driver.
City buses are cheap (¥2–¥3) but routes can be complex. The Airport Express (Line 330) runs frequently between Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport and major districts. Allow 45–60 minutes from airport to Nanshan.
Shenzhen is just 30 minutes from Hong Kong by high-speed rail (Futian or Shenzhen North Station). Land border crossings: Luohu (MTR connection), Futian (24h), and Shenzhen Bay (closest to airport). Bring your passport.
Download before you arrive: DiDi (rides), Alipay (pay + metro QR), Metro Man (metro planner), Amap (Gaode) (maps with English mode), WeChat (messaging + pay). Google Maps works partially — use Amap for reliability.
Nanshan District is very walkable. Use Meituan Bike or Hello Bike (scan with app) for short trips. Many areas have shaded pedestrian paths. The Shenzhen Bay Park promenade is perfect for a scenic walk or bike ride.

Practical advice to make your Shenzhen business trip smooth and productive
Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook are blocked in China. Options: (1) Use a roaming SIM with data (expensive but works), (2) Buy a local SIM (China Mobile/Unicom) — some plans include international access, (3) Use WeChat for all local communication. Most hotels offer Wi-Fi but speeds may be limited.
